Lala Lajpat Rai College

 

Location:  The Lala Lajpat Rai College of Commerce and Economics has sylvan surroundings on one side and the Haji Ali sea face on the other. It is situated at Haji Ali on the road named after the great patriot, Lala Lajpat Rai. The college is close to Mahalakshmi Railway Station and is well connected to all parts of the city.  

Foundation:  The Lala Lajpat Rai Memorial Trust formed in 1959, on the eve of the Birth Centenary Celebration, to commemorate the memory of Lala Lajpat Rai, comprises of The Lala Lajpat Rai College of Commerce and Economics founded in 1972 and The Lala Lajpat Rai Institue of Management Studies established in 1994. The current academic year 1999-2000 will witness the concluding function of the silver jubilee year of the college, which will be celebrated in a befitting way.

  Crowd:  The college attracts students from every strata of the society.  

Academics:  The results of the Board and the University examination speak for themselves of the academic excellence. The HSC results have always been above 95 per cent and many students end up getting distinctions and first classes. Results here have always been higher than the Board and University results.  

Sports:  The college strongly believe that sports is a necessary part of education and thereby encourages their students to participate actively at various inter-collegiate, state and national level competitions. There are teams for both the guys and the gals. The college boxing team has been consistently winning at the University events.  

Festive Fever:  The festivals here include 'Rendezvous' (an inter-collegiate extravaganza ), 'Shishir' for the junior college, 'Anand Utsav', 'Mela' (fun fair) and 'Impressions' for the students of the Management. The Student council plays an important role in organising these programmes. Moreover, the students take pride in participating in various other inter- collegiate festivals like Malhar, Arambh, Dimensions, Kaleidoscope and many more.

  Library:  The college library houses a collection of more than 31,000 volumes with the necessary infrastructure and aesthetic environment for serious studying. It is a well-housed special academic library in Mumbai. It also has to its credit a collection of video cassettes in the subject related to commerce, economics and management.

  Auditorium:  The Amar Gian Grover Auditorium is a prized possession of the college with a theatre-cum-auditorium facility, a wide screen, projectors with cinema scope lens and latest sound and lighting equipment. The spacious stage also attracts students from various other colleges to perform. 

 Hangouts:  Lalarites hangout at Rolling Bowling near Mahalakshmi station, Cross Roads, Heera Panna, Mafco and Tonamec. One cannot forget the very apna college canteen and the sandwichwalla outside the college premises.  

Special feature:  On January 8, 1996, the then president of India, Dr Shankar Dayal Sharma, visited the college and unveiled the statue of Lala Lajpat Rai mounted on a granite podium. Popular Lalarites:Harish Patel, Laxmikant Berde, Nikita Wadia, Sunil Ranade, Rustom Havewalla (National level cyclist) and Vrinda Bordkar are just a few names.
