HR College
Full name: Hassaram Rijhumal College of Commerce and Economics. Also known as: HR - was popularly referred to as the 'House of Romance' but the sobriquet of 'High Rankers' is catching up.
Getting there: Conveniently located in the heart of South Mumbai, it's a hop, skip and jump from Churchgate station. Hop out of the train, skip your way to Dinshaw Wachha Road and jump into the college gate.
Population facts: The HR crowd mainly comprises of upper middle class and elite sections of society of which the Sindhi papads constitute a major chunk. HRites are a masala mix of the burly hairy buggers, the hardly bearable sluggers, the nerds, the geeks, the bench warmers and the studs of all shapes and sizes.
Local trends: HRites truly live up to the reputation of being the most outstanding students around. For most of the time they're seen standing outside the college gate bird watching, gossiping or simply chilling out.
Grub scene: The college canteen is just too small to cater to the vast population (but then there's plenty of food for thought at the library). Anyway, the unofficial HR canteen is outside college where everything from popping hot pav bhaji and yummy Chinese delicacies to golden gulab jamuns are available at affordable rates. The HR dosa wallah is arguably the best in town. Not to mention, there's apna Croissants and an entire gamut of restaurants to choose from in the vicinity depending upon your tastes and size of your wallet.
Hot Spots: There's more to HR than just the five floor building with its outstanding students. It offers close proximity to a lot of places that suit the various needs of the junta. There's Satyam and Archies for the lovey-dovey, mush melon types; the Oval Maidan for the sporty kinds; Eros, Sterling and Regal for the movie buffs; Marine Drive for the hard core romantics and course, the CCI Club's only a stones throw away. The best hangout however is the state of art gym in college on the ground floor.
Courses: Besides the normal BCom degree, HR also offers vocational courses to its students in Ad, Travel & Tourism and Tax. The college also has a student exchange programme with the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) and each and every classroom of HR College is equipped with audio-visual facilities. Special Achievements: HR was the first college to be selected for the vocational courses started by the UGC. The Harvard faculty paid a visit to HR in 1996 to train its teachers in making classroom teaching most effective. Vice Principal Indu Shahani, was recently presented the National Mahila Award for Excellence 1997 for outstanding contribution to education by Prez KR Narayanan. HR's also known for producing number of ranks at the TYBcom and HSC level.
Extra-currics: A hazaar activities are conducted by the enthusiastic members of the Rotaract Club, Planning Forum, Students' Council, World of Words (WOW), NSS and AISEC.
All
in All: A great place to be! With an excellent faculty, a wonderful
crowd and a fantastic atmosphere, its certainly one of the best Commerce
colleges around.
