Guru Nanak Khalsa College
Campus news: Rare to find a proper campus, eh? Come over to this college established in the year 1937, and you'll love it's airy corridors and sprawling campus complete with ivy growing over the structure to give it an absolutely Victorian look.
Sports: Sports is given it's due importance as is academics. The much neglected national game is played in Khalsa with much gusto. Their hockey team has participated in national tournaments. Gold medalist Dhanraj Pillai was an ex-student of the college and still comes over to practice at its sports ground. The Indian hockey team for the World Cup has included a Khalsaite and so has the list of Arjuna Award winners. What's more, here girls are as enthusiastic about sports, as guys. Among the other games played are basketball, judo, badminton, boxing, handball, football, chess and cricket. And there is a champion in most of them.
What else: The NSS students are keenly into programmes as hospital service, tree plantation, slum rehabilitation and adult literary drives. The NCC cadets also pretty active, went recently to Tungareshwar on an expedition. Where most colleges celebrate their festival for 3 to 4 days, 'Nazrana', their fest is celebrated for a whole week.
What about academics? The college has excellent teaching staff and is specially popular for it's science stream. Not to be left out, the arts faculty speaks of nothing less for itself. For instance, the English department includes an Oxford graduate. Boy! Are we impressed??
Hangouts: Canteen in such an indispensable word in the dictionary of any college-goer and so it is with Khalsaites. It is situated in the building behind the main structure near the sports ground (perfect location, na!) So that after all that work-out you can hit the canteen tables. The fast food joint, 'Classic' seems quite crowded with Khalsaites and so is the 'Softy' ice cream parlour. And what's more, there is the pool parlour 'Astro Mischief', opened this summer by none other than Sunil Shetty. Our guess is it'll soon become a popular haunt.
Library: The best features of this spacious library is the collection on Sikh history and religion, which is one of the best and largest in the state of Maharashtra. An exhibition of Chemistry and Physics books was also recently held in the library.
Famous students: George Fernandes, Dhanraj Pillai, Madhavan (of Ghar-Jamai fame), Raj Kapoor, Dilip Kumar and Sunil Dutt.
