Ramniranjan Jhunjhunwala College

 

Location:  The Ramniranjan Jhunjhunwala College, founded in 1963 by the Hindi Vidya Prachar Samiti, caters to the needs of the increasing population of the northern suburbs and is conveniently located just opposite Ghatkopar station on the West. Most of the fast trains stop at Ghatkopar station and the suburb is well linked with Navi Mumbai as well. 

 Specialities:  The well-equipped postgraduate Departments of Botany with its Plant Biotechnology laboratory, Chemistry, Physics and Zoology. The research facilities are excellent and obviously has generous funding from Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science and Technology, New Delhi, BRNS, Department of Atomic Energy, Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, University Grants Commission, Johnson and Johnson India Ltd., to name a few. It is worth mentioning that several faculty members of other local colleges have enjoyed the benefit of carrying out research in the Department of Biological Sciences and have obtained their Doctoral Degrees from Jhunjhunwala College. The office is computerised and has the latest communication technologies viz.: E-mail, Internet, fax, etc. Besides a separate computer room, all Departments have their own PC's.  

Library:  Attracts students and teachers of different colleges affiliated to the University of Mumbai. The Library has a huge collection of around 50,000 books, encyclopaedias and some leading scientific journals. The Postgraduate students have open access to the books. 

 Hangouts:  The canteen only provides tea. But students can be seen crowding at the adjacent Neo Welcome and Bharat Cafe.  Activities: The college celebrates its traditional day with fanfare. The youth festival, 'Reflections', is an Intra-collegiate fest providing a platform for motivating and bringing out the talents in the students. 'Tarang', an Inter-collegiate story-writing competition organised by the College and sponsored by the Pushpak Charitable Trust, attracts competitors from students in Maharashtra and stories are in three languages - Hindi, English and Marathi.  

Sports:  Lack of its own ground has not prevented the College from being a force to reckon with in sports like cricket and basketball. In basketball, the college team has been a winner for the last two years. Similarly, the cricket team has won several titles.

   Stars of Jhunjhunwala:  Registrar, University of Mumbai, Dr P V Pradhan, Cricketer Balwinder Singh Sandhu, Principal Kurup (Vaze College), science writer Vithal Nadkarni to name a few, are notable names to have passed off from here.
